Cookies on this website
by Andrew Dunn
Cookies are small text files which might be placed on your computer by websites that you visit. They are widely used, in conjunction with JavaScript, to make websites work, or work more efficiently, as well as to provide information to the owner of the site. Because of the EU Cookie Law of 26th May 2011, we are obliged to explain our use of cookies and to give you control over their use. Otherwise, if anyone should complain, then we might be liable to a fine of as much as £500,000.

The following table gives details of the cookies we use and why we use them.

This websitecookie_statusUsed to control the use of cookies on this website. It can have one of five possible values: on.visible / on.invisible / off.visible / off.invisible / null. It must be set to on.visible or on.invisible for Google Analytics and Stat Counter to be functional (they will be disabled otherwise). If set to on.invisible or off.invisible, the status banner does not appear at the bottom of our pages. This cookie can be disabled by your web browser, in which case it will be displayed in this table as having value null and the status banner will show Cookies Disabled. Alternatively, if cookie_status has value null, but the cookie banner is not visible, then your web browser is not able to run JavaScript. You may have detected the irony here in that, in order to conform to the EU Cookie Law, this extra cookie is required.
This website_ga-Google Analytics is used to collect information about how visitors use our website. It helps us make improvements. Information is collected in an anonymous form, including the number of visitors to our site, how they were directed here and which pages they visited. For more information, please view Google's Privacy Policy.
Stat Counter's websiteis_unique-The Stat Counter, near the top left of this page, shows the number of unique visits to this website since 27-06-2005. This cookie is used to determine whether a visitor is here for the first time or is returning. It prevents the counter from incrementing each time a page is loaded by the same user. It also provides additional functionality, similar to that of Google Analytics. More information can be found on Stat Counter's website.

Upon first arrival at this website, the cookie_status cookie (explained in the table above) will be set to on.visible. You can change its value by clicking on a link in the following table. It will retain this value for a period of one year (or until you clear it using your browser). You are thus able to prevent this website from using both Google Analytics and Stat Counter. Note that we are not responsible for cookies which may be set on following links we provide to external websites.
